What this specialty covers.

An endocrine and metabolic work-up investigates hormonal and metabolic abnormalities, in particular those linked to diabetes, the thyroid, weight or lipid metabolism. The tests are defined according to the patient's medical context.

Persistent fatigue, unexplained weight gain, borderline blood results: these complaints often drift from one test to the next without ever being looked at as a whole. The endocrinologist takes the complete file, orders what is missing and gives you a single reading rather than a string of numbers.

What patients ask us.

Yes for most of the tests: blood glucose, lipid profile, certain hormone measurements. Allow eight to twelve hours, water permitted. The exact instruction is sent to you with the schedule.

No. The great majority of nodules are benign and simply need monitoring. Ultrasound classifies the nodule, and only a minority warrants a needle biopsy and then, possibly, surgery. The endocrinologist tells you where your case sits.

Do not stop it without advice. Some measurements read differently under treatment, but stopping without supervision is riskier than a degree of imprecision. Send your prescriptions with the file and the doctor will give you the instruction.

Yes. Unexplained weight gain calls for a hormonal cause to be looked for — thyroid, cortisol, insulin resistance — before diet is blamed. The work-up includes body composition assessment and a dietetic consultation.

Have your file read before you decide.

A doctor reviews it and tells you what is possible, what is not and what it involves. With no commitment on your part.
