What this specialty covers.

Oncology covers the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of cancer. Depending on the type of cancer and its stage, care may combine several disciplines and different therapeutic approaches within an individual strategy.

In cancer care, time matters and so does consistency. The file is presented to a multidisciplinary team meeting, where surgeon, oncologist, radiation oncologist and radiologist decide together on the order of treatments. You receive a written proposal setting out what is done, in what order and why — including where surgery is not the first step.

What patients ask us.

It is the meeting where the specialists involved — surgeon, oncologist, radiation oncologist, radiologist, pathologist — examine your file together and agree a common strategy. It prevents each one proposing the treatment of their own discipline. The decision is then given back to you in writing.

Oncology files are handled as a priority: acknowledgement is immediate and contact is quick. How soon it reaches the team meeting then depends on the file being complete — a missing pathology report is the most frequent cause of delay.

It can, provided the protocols given, the doses received and the monitoring reports are available. Continuing chemotherapy has to be prepared: send the file before arranging travel.

Often, yes, because the histological type and the markers determine the whole treatment. A review may be requested, along with further analysis of the tissue block. Keep your blocks and slides carefully: they are essential.

Have your file read before you decide.

A doctor reviews it and tells you what is possible, what is not and what it involves. With no commitment on your part.
